Two cities, two sets of utilities
By land area, about 91 percent of San Marcos lies in 78666, and roughly a quarter of Kyle does too, according to the Census Bureau's ZIP-to-place files. That means two neighbors can have different utilities and permit offices at the same ZIP code.
A Kyle address in this ZIP follows the City of Kyle's pages. A San Marcos address follows the City of San Marcos, which lists its own emergency line for electric and water or wastewater problems.
Check which city your address is in before you call a utility. The mailing city is not always the taxing city.
Flood facts for the San Marcos side
The City of San Marcos says flooding there comes mainly from the San Marcos River, the Blanco River and Purgatory Creek, and that floodwater can cover many blocks up to three or four feet deep. It adds that flooding can come with little warning.
The National Weather Service said of the May 2015 event that the worst rivers were the Blanco and San Marcos, which ran through Wimberley and San Marcos. The city's floodplain page links to the Hays County rain and stream gauge map, FEMA's Map Service Center and FloodSmart.
Home insurance policies do not cover flood. The San Marcos page says so, and so does the Texas Department of Insurance.
